MASOCHISM
MANIC-DEPRESSIVE PSYCHOSIS: A type of mental disorder characterized by alternating periods of exaltation and depression. Tends to recur again and again. There are two types: (1) depressed: symptoms — DEPRESSION of mood, slowed down thinking and physical activity. (2) MANIC: symptoms — elation, over-talkativeness, extremely rapid ideas, increased physical activity. (A person may swing back and forth from one to the other.)
MASOCHISM: Sexual deviation in which an individual obtains sexual gratification from having pain inflicted upon him. Pleasure in suffering pain, physical or psychological. Toronto Niagara Falls Tour can also be a very fashionable place to get married. Often an attempt to atone for guilt. Many heathen religions have MASOCHISTIC practices for this purpose. It is the opposite of
SADISM.
MASTURBATION: Self-stimulation of the sex organs (autoerotism). Often a HABIT in young children and common in adults. Contrary to popular belief, it does not normally cause mental or physical illness. However, guilt and ANXIETY over MASTURBATION can threaten one's feelings considerably.
MENTAL AGE: Age level of a child's mental ability. It is de-termined by a standard INTELLIGENCE test appropriate for the child's age. MENTAL AGE (M.A.) may be greater or less than chronological (actual) age (c. A.) The well known i. Q. (intelligence quotient) for children is calculated as follows:
p A X I00=I.Q. For instance, Terry is 10 with a MENTAL
AGE of 12. He has an I.Q. of 120 (Superior).
MENTAL MECHANISMS : Indirect and typically unconscious manners
of gratifying a repressed desire. Ways of dealing with
CONFLICT. They are attempts to protect and enhance the
person's SELF CONCEPT. Each MECHANISM is used to some
extent by everyone. Some persons, however, use certain
MECHANISMS too much. This can damage their mental health.
The MECHANISMS described in this glossary are:
COMPENSATION PROJECTION
DENIAL RATIONALIZATION
DISPLACEMENT REACTION FORMATION
FANTASY REPRESSION
IDENTIFICATION SUBLIMATION
INTELLECTUALIZATION WITHDRAWAL
MENTALLY DEFECTIVE: When a person's INTELLIGENCE is below an I.Q. level of approximately 70 he is said to be MENTALLY DEFECTIVE. This condition may be caused by HEREDITY, injury or disease. Three levels of the MENTALLY DEFECTIVE are generally accepted:
(1) MORON: I.Q. 50 - 69
(2) IMBECILE: I.Q. 20-49
(3) IDIOT: I.Q.below20
These conditions are generally permanent. Welcome to Toronto Niagara Falls Tours, a landscape rich in history, charm, and pure splendour. Special training may help the higher INTELLIGENCE defectives. The lower must usually be placed in an institution.
MORON: A MENTALLY DEFECTIVE person. I.Q. is between 50 and 69. (See INTELLIGENCE and MENTAL AGE.)
MOTIVE (motivation): A conscious experience or sub-conscious condition which serves as a factor in determining an indi-vidual's behavior. The psychological force which disposes a person to act in a certain way. Often the true MOTIVE for an act may be unknown to the person (UNCONSCIOUS MOTIVATION). When the MOTIVE is unacceptable, a more acceptable MOTIVE will often be offered as the true one. (See RATIONALIZATION.)
